23 Things is a great innovation that's been adapted by lots of different libraries, but there's just so many Things, that it
came be rather offputting. We’ve been inspired by UCL’s 11 ½ things to create
a cut down version that we hope will appeal to you.
12 Things is brought to you by members of the East of England Health Information Skills Trainers (EEHIST)

So what is '12 Things' anyway?
12 Things is a self-directed course aimed at introducing you
to a range of tools that could help your personal and professional development
as a librarian, information professional or something else. Each fortnight, we'll write about one or more
tools from our list of 12 things and invite you to try it out and/or reflect on
how it could help your professional development.
Some of the tasks will be practical Things for you to try
out straight away, and some of them will be less immediate: ideas to try in the
future, or things you can start working towards now and realise in due course
or when opportunity arises!
Who's it for?
12 Things is for primarily created for health and medical
library staff in the East of England, and the West Midlands. But anyone who
thinks they might benefit from it is welcome to follow the programme.
How do I take part?
To take part, you'll need to set up your own blog (don't
panic - that'll be explained in the first Thing!), register it with us (we'll
explain that too) and use it to reflect on each Thing that we cover. If you already have a blog, you can used that
to participate.
What's in it for me if I take part?
Evidence of your reflective practice that might been good
for career progression, perhaps some new ways of working that will make life
more efficient and/or interesting in the future, the opportunity to meet and
interact with colleagues in a new way, and (not least) a certificate if you
complete the programme (so long as you are a member of library staff in East of
England and West Midlands cluster).
How does this online learning programme work?
This is a self-discovery programme which encourages you to
take control of your own learning and to use your lifelong learning skills
through exploration and play. You are encouraged to work together and share
with each other your discoveries, techniques and tips. By reading the blogs of
other participants you will probably learn as much as from reading our posts.
What if I need help?
Then please ask us!
We'll be trying to give very clear instructions on the technical aspects
of each Thing, but if anything's unclear then please comment on the blog or
tweet @12thingsEOE and we'll try
and help out. We're hoping that a wide spectrum of people will be taking part,
so you can also ask fellow participants for assistance and make the most of
their knowledge too. This programme is
all about learning from each other, so don't be afraid to ask people questions
or to answer them!
I just wanted to see if I would be alerted to my own comment after I signed up to follow the blog!
ReplyDeleteam tempted to do the usual "Hello World" but instead will just draw your attention to the Social Media in the NHS website http://nhssm.org.uk/
ReplyDeleteWell done to EEHIST for devising the condensed version of 12 Things. So far I have found it educating and interesting..
ReplyDeleteThere's something delightful about seeing the "23 things" program still going strong after 6 years. I was part of the first cohort and worked alongside Helene Blowers. It was quite an experience.
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly become quite a phenomenon.
